Sweet Orange oil is safe when diffused or topically applied with caution. While Sweet Orange oil carries a range of positive qualities, it is highly potent and should be used in small quantities if applied to the skin to avoid inflammation and dermatitis. You should dilute it oil with a carrier oil or alternative base to reap its benefits without worry.

There are certain essential oils that should not be used by women who are pregnant, but Sweet Orange oil is generally safe. Sweet Orange can support uterine health in women. If you’re about to go into labor and need an energizing boost, inhaling Sweet Orange oil can give a quick energy boost.

Sweet Orange essential oil, like other citrus-based oils may be phototoxic, meaning they cause skin sensitivity when exposed to the sun immediately after use. Rule of thumb: when using a citrus-based oil either aromatically or topically, make sure you wait at least 24 hours before going outside in the sun. If you have extremely sensitive skin or have an allergy to oranges or citrus-based plants, this may not be the right essential oil for you as it can cause serious skin damage. If Sweet Orange essential oil is ingested or used in food, it should be added in very small amounts (1-2 drops). If ingested in large amounts, it can induce nausea, vomiting and appetite loss.
