Meet the Roster: Lindsay and Sal, local yoga instructors

Posted by Olympia L on

They chat about how they discovered yoga, what inspires them, what their favorite Way of Will products are, and show you how to get into bakasana!

Tell us about yourselves!

My name is Lindsay McFarlane but since gr.8 people call me Lindsay Mac. I am passionate about movement and leadership. I am currently a Store Manager at Lululemon Yorkdale and I love this company. The clothing is obviously amazing but the company culture is second to none and I have been able to create and live my best life with the support from them! I also teach yoga on the side and love attending Restorative classes. I did my teaching training at 889 and in my opinion it's one of the best trainings out there right now.

My name is Sal Sayeed and i am passionate about supporting and creating community. Through my yoga classes i aim to show people that they are so much more capabale then they realized. Self belief is the most powerful tool. This summer i will be teaching at the muskok yoga festival.

Why Yoga?

Why not!! It's an amazing way to move your body and get stronger not just physically but mentally as well. It's a chunk of time you can take for yourself just for YOU.

It is a practice that gives me the opportunity to be focused on my breath and to find the calm in any storm.

How did you discover Yoga?

Through injury and a great friend. I tore my ACL playing soccer and the recovery was mentally tough, I felt like I couldn't do anything. My friend who was really into Moksha at the time invited me to a class and said I would like it and would probably be good at it because I used to do gymnastics. I almost passed in my first class because I was focusing so hard on the new postures I forgot to breathe! lol It's been love ever since and it truly helped heal my mind and body after my injury.

Lindsay took me to a hot yoga class in ottawa. I found it very challenging which made me want to come back. I initially came for the pose, but i stayed for the breath.

What is your favourite way to sweat?

I love running and circuit training. I've always enjoyed cardio and I am really getting into some strength training now.

Playing basketball or sparring. Competition and fighting require complete presence for success. The moment you lose focus there is instant feedback.

What was your biggest learning of 2016?

To get over myself and stop getting in my own way. I say I like to "ride the wave" and "go with the flow" but in reality I like to have control. When I finally accepted that truth, I was able to release my control or expectations in the moment and trust the process (and myself!) as it unfolded. The result is that I can work more powerfully with others, I am a happier person and the outcomes in my personal and work life are more dynamic.

Taking on a challenge is simply an opportunity to grow.

What keeps you motivated?

I mean I am an athlete, always have been. My competitive edge always keeps me motivated. I have goals and hurdles I want to reach and when I accomplish one I create another.

To create a happy successful family with Lindsay.

How does your partner motivate you?

Sal is just so fun and so smart! I honestly am laughing and smiling whenever I am around him. He has this unique ability that comes  naturally to him where he's amping you up and challenging you at the same time. We work out a lot together and both for lululemon so he always pushing me to grow and acknowledging me for the great work I do. He also knows a lot about a lot of things and can help me connect the dots when I seem lost. I just love him!

She is one of the hardest working people i know. I am so proud of her. Seeing her care and attention towards her community drives me to be a great leader and person for my community as well.

Who inspires you?

My brother is really inspiring me lately, I should probably tell him. He was a national level gymnast and always loved coaching but he never thought he could make it a career. Fast forward a few years and he bought himself a townhome in Mississauga and is one of the youngest National Level coaches in Canadian gymnastics right now. He's doing what he loves, he's shaping young athletes and he's carving out his own path. SO RAD!

My father! He raised 6 kids and proves everyday that kindness and love are your greatest characteristics. And spiderman - he is super cool!

Do you have any future plans we should know about?

More recently I am moving to Vancouver for the summer with lululemon to work on the Sea Wheeze half marathon! A BHAG (Big Hairy Audacious Goal) is that Sal and I buy a beach home in the next  5 years to run retreats and go on vacations...you all are welcome to visit!

I will be teaching at the muskoka yoga festival july 8 and july 9.

In what moments in your life do you feel most powerful?

When I am with my family and loved ones.

When i am in the zone playing basketball or moving my body.

Do you have any advice for our Way of Will Community?

Set goals, live a BIG life but don't forget to have fun and laugh lots along the way! Yoga is an amazing way to practice this kind of self awareness. People look so serious and intense sometimes when they are practicing and it's important to smile, be wild and enjoy the moment regardless of what you "look like"!.

Meditate once a day! Even for just one moment. It’s always just a drop in the bucket. Every drop and every moment count.

Tell us a story about the other person :)

Oh man...which one to share lol For our first valentines day he gave me like 7 Xena Warrior Princess valentine's cards (I LOVE XENA) and wrote on each of them how much he liked me based on the card. So for example "I like you more than Xena loves throwing her chakram" or "I like you more than Xena and Gabrielle in a hot tub" lol They made me laugh and they were so thoughtful. I knew I needed to lock him down.

I was really upset over a mark i got on a paper in University. Lindsay wrote and drew a mini comic book about me getting revenge on the TA that marked it. It was a good comic!
